Kurogane Hayate (黒鉄はやて) is the title character of Hayate X Blade.

Kurogane Hayate isn't the brightest light in the sky, but she always has good intentions, and no matter how out of touch she may seem with reality, there is a method to her madness. She is generally cheery and overconfident, always ready to make her friends happy. This usually results in her getting shooed off, yelled at, or pounded. Still, as Kuga Jun once said, she really has an effect on people. Whether this effect is more often good or bad is still unclear, since although she does manage to clear people's heads and provide great comic relief, she also annoys the heck out of them.
Hayate and her twin sister Nagi were abandoned as infants in a public coin-locker, where they were found by a high school student named Haijima Nagare. They were then left in the care of an orphanage named Dandelion Garden. Nagare remained in contact with them, however, and eventually adopted them with her new husband, Kurogane Taiyou, making them members of the Kurogane family. Taiyou trains both of them in Kendo and in the Kurogane sword style, giving them the swordfighting skills they will later use at Tenchi Academy.
When in her third year of elementary school, Hayate quit Kendo, leaving Nagi to continue on with the sword alone. Hence, after elementary school, Nagi enrolls at Tenchi, but Hayate does not. However, Nagi then suffers an injury to her leg in a car accident, and is unable to attend at the start of sixth grade. So that she will not lose her place at the school, Hayate poses as Nagi and goes in her stead, intending to switch out once she has recovered...
